Sony Wega TV is piece of crap

My experience was always that Sony made high quality televisions that will last a lifetime. Boy was I wrong. About 2 years ago I made the choice to buy Sony Wega TV model number KV-32FS17 and it has broken down three times. Last time it took three trips from the repair guy and many phone calls for the TV to work. Now here we are less than 8 months later and it is broken again. Once again the TV comes on for a few minutes then it goes off and blinks the annoying light on the front of the TV. I’m extremely upset over this and am ready to go buy a Toshiba. Maybe I just have a lemon but if that is the case then Best Buy better replace it.

Don’t worry I’ll keep you posted.

Dude. I don’t know about the Sony Wega TV (apparently crap), but the site looks great. I would expect nothing less from the computer master himself. Keep up the good work…See you in Augusta!

I came across your comment re: Sony as I am investigating a new tv for my new home.
I have owned a 27″ tube Sony for 13 years and it needed repair only twice. Considering that it went through two moves and I use it more than the average consumer as I am a Professor of Film Studies at a nearby university, it strikes me you got a lemon. I had the same problem with a brand new Saab that became my “sob” story. It happens. Better with a TV than an expensive car.
    Best.

We are having troubles with our Sony Wega KV-36FV15. It’s about 3 years old and has moved twice. Today we tried to turn it on and got no response. My husband has taken it apart to try and replace the fuse, hopefully that is all that is broke. It’s a shame to buy such expensive equipment from such a reputable company and receive no help from them. We sympathize with you and hope you find a tv that will last.

Bought our 36” Sony two years ago, day 81 the TV would blank and the red light would come on. On day 86, I took it to a repair center for repairs. The repair center at the time guessed that it was a bad Tube because the shop had seen the same problem many times in the last six months. Sony explained it as a bad batch of tubes from a supplier. However the repair shop called back and said they could find no problems. I demanded they keep the set because the 90-day warranty had already run out and I knew there was a problem. Two weeks later I called the TV repair shop and they said they had My TV on the whole time and no problems and cropped up. Two days later the repair shop called back and said the TV had started acting up and that it was the tube and a new one had been ordered. Something about a safety circuit, the tube would arc and the safety circuit would shut the TV down and blink the red light. Two years later and I turned the TV off the other day. (Something that rarely gets done.) When I turned the TV back on it started blinking the screen and to this time the picture keeps blanking out every 10 seconds or so. I purchased a Zenith TV 14 years before the Sony and NEVER had it in a repair shop. Moved three times and watched the Zenith until the picture turned green. My parents owned a Zenith for 23 years. Looking around on the web shows that yours was not just a lemon. I’ll never own another Sony!

I HAVE A WEGA TV WHICH I PURCHASED FROM SEARS 3 YEARS AGO AND YESTERDAY SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH THE TV. IT KNOW DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO CHANGE THE TV/VIDEO BUTTONS, THE VOLUME DOES NOT WORK, AND YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE CHANNELS ON THE TV. THE REMOTE CONTROL CANT ACCESS THESE BUTTON NEITHER. I BOUGHT THE TV AT SEARS AND AM TRYING TO HAVE IT REPLACED BUT I DON’T THINK THAT I WILL HAVE ANY LUCK. ANYONE WITH THESE PROBLEMS PLEASE EMAIL SO THAT I CAN FIGURE OUT MORE OR LESS A PRICE FOR THE REPAIRS.

My SOny broke 2 weeks after I received it. I found out that the manufacturer had a poor design for a PC board that contained a heavy component (transformer?). When the tv was moved, the PC board (poorly supported) cracked causing a temporary then fatal circuit break, red flashing light, etc. The tech replaced the board with a new design which fully supported the component. Working well ever since. You may have purchased from the same lot that had the defect. Call SOny and make lots of noise.

Bought a Sony Wega 27″ a little over 3 years ago. Last night while watching it we heard a very, very loud “pop”…no picture….
no sound….just that stupid flashing red light. I’m setting up Mr. Repairman now.

Like so many of you, I had a 27″ Trinitron for
nearly 13 years without a single problem.

I’m one repair bill away from forever losing faith in Sony.

Received a Sony KP 51WS510 51 inch projection HDTV in March 2004 as a gift from my parents. TV was manufactured on December 3 2003. Expensive TV worked great until last Tuesday Night May 11, 2004. TV would not go on, and had blinking stand by lights. Called Sony, and Sony said that TV is under warranty, to call authorized Repair Shop. Called Repair Shop and explained situation, they asked how many times lights were blinking before it went off. I told them 6 times. They said it is a bad board, and set up appointment for warranty repair on Tuesday May 18, 2004. Repair man came over, and opened up TV, and found this large transformer thing on the back of the circuit board broken off. Said it was the D Circuit board, and that it is not under warranty because it is a broken board. The board only broke in the corner under this large tranformer thing. Repair man said that it will cost $800.00 to repair, that sony will not warranty it because it is a physical broken board. All I know it is brand new and was an expensive tv for having only 8 weeks. I think that the board must be defective. What do I do to get Sony to repair this under warranty, or do I take it to the dumps, and my parents through away their money……..HELP

We bought a Sony kv27fs12 WEGA about 5 years ago. Today it just won’t power on. Nothing responds.
It’s a piece of crap. Very upsetting to spend all that money and now we have to find a repair shop and spend more money…..We have an RCA console that is 22 years old that still has a beautiful picture…..no repairs ever…..
    I’ll never buy aSony again……

I don’t have a WEGA TV but do/did have a WEGA DVD player which cost me about $400 two years ago. It died last month - “no disk” message. I called Sony and they do not repair it but will sell me a reconditioned machine for about $320 with tax and shipping. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I too have many Sony audio/video products and have found them to be superior to others and all the remotes talk to each other. My 12 year old Sony 27″ Trinitron XBR (top of the line at that time) which cost about $1000 has only had one repair and has been moved 4 times and still has a great clear image. Sony must have fired all their quality control people or something because this DVD player problem and Sony’s repsponse is unsatisfactory, to say the least. Very diappointed Sony customer.

I bought almost all sony products, 4 years back I bought SONY 36″ WEGA but now all of sudden this
TV goes off and never powers on (some standby light blinks). I have RCA for 8 years never repaired
and still going strong. I will never buy any sony products, never again.

  17. Dave Says:

Sony used to be the best. Looks like they are sourcing cheap components now. I have a KV-36XBR250 which has the same problem listed by several here and many on other sites… After only 3 years (not much in TV time), I tried to turn it on the other night and only get the “Stand By” blinking red light. If something happened, like a spike or strike, I could understand it. But was watching it only a few minutes earlier and was just turning it back on. Being a premium price set, I would have guessed they used premium components. Doesn’t appear to be so. My old GE set is still plugging away after 20 years and 3 lightening strikes. The Sony just breaks on its own. I will call the company like others suggest to see what they say. If the problem is this common, it should have been taken care of by the company with a recall. Ge did that many years ago with another appliance and it cost them a bundle, but was the right thing to do. I am plenty mad right now about this (if you couldn’t tell). If Sony can’t stand up for their product, there is NO reason to ever buy anything from them again. [Cindy… Did your husband ever find a simple fix such as a fuse or was the issue only resolved by a repair man?]
