Counting Crows - New Release

After months of waiting counting crows finally released their new record and it rocks. I actually found the whole thing on bear share a few weeks ago and have enjoyed the slightly scratchy version for a while. Crows_HardCandy.jpg

‘Hard Candy’ was released on July 9th and I plan on going out this weekend to my local record store and making the purchase. The CD has an interesting montage of music from a jamming’ rock band sound to a U2 synthesizer sound. I found it interesting to review the bands first release ‘August and Everything After’ after listening to this record. There first CD had a garage band feel and today they have a much more polished sound with everything from backup singers to synthesizers.

I really dig the record, every song makes me tap my foot and sing along with Adam so I’m not complaining. In fact I feel this is the crows’ best release yet. The songs have great cohesion and even though the styles might differ the whole record fits nicely together.

Steve Lillywhite, the album’s producer (also produced U2 and Dave Matthews), had a heavy, but positive, influence. The songs are very polished and have a studio sound to them. Yet I believe the bands tendency to rent a studio and just play for the fun of playing comes through on every song. They experimented with a few new ideas and enjoyed every minute of it. Even though they have a big time producer and a much better studio they still sound like their having fun and that makes another great record.
