Believe in West Virginia
I was born and raised in southern West Virginia and cannot wait to move back. It is pretty obvious that I’m in the computer industry and have no plans on rejecting the keyboard in favor of a shovel or pick so what is a poor West Virginian supposed to do. In the past 2 years I’ve made a move from college to Pittsburgh. I’ve tried over the past 24 months to make Pittsburgh my home but I just cannot seem to find my niche. I’ve got a decent job with a technology company and a beautiful town home but I’m not satisfied. I wish I could go to the local K-mart and run into an old friend or hop on a bike and take off into the mountains, but around here that seems impossible.
I guess the city life just isn’t for me. I love the ability to run downtown and see a show or have the option to eat any ethnic food I desire, but its just not home. I miss everything from the hills to the southern accent, its just not home.
So my wife and I have decided that it is time to move home. That is much easier said than done. As I mentioned earlier I’m in the computer industry and have no plans of leaving so I must find a technology job in West Virginia. I know it sounds like an oxymoron. West Virginia may be a little backwards and it might have a long way to go in technology but it is a beautiful place and it could be a great place for new technology to be born.
I just believe there are a percentage of technology folks that would love to move to a rural setting and still be able to pursue their passion for technology. West Virginia has plenty of land so lets build a large technology park put a couple of T1’s in and start a few small tech. companies. Give the companies some tax breaks and a few golden keys and let them make WV a technology haven.
There are a few people thinking this way and I wish them luck. I hope that one day I can join one of these teams to help contribute to the technology of WV. In the meantime I’ll continue to look for exciting technology in WV and I’ll keep you posted as I find information.
